Fabio Cannavaro’s Euro 2008 nightmare seems to have re-surfaced as he will miss Italy’s Confederations Cup opener against the USA.
Cannavaro has sustained a calf injury and it is feared that he could miss more than one game, a situation similar to his Euro 2008 experience, though he missed the entire tournament on that occasion.
According to sourced, the Italy captain was not fit to even train on Friday and Italy doctor Enrico Castellacci has recommended that Cannavaro sit out Monday's match.
La Nazionale clash with the USA before playing Egypt in their second Group B match on Thursday in Pretoria.
Cannavaro was also not involved in Wednesday's fixture against New Zealand and he missed the 6-0 thrashing of Tshwane on Friday in the Azzurri's final warm-up game.
